Moscow calls Liz Truss' move to leave G20 meeting a 'deep boycott': Announces UK PM nomination, alludes to Russia and China

Liz Truss decided to first leave the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Bali, last week, amid the turmoil in Britain's domestic politics and the resignation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Later, Truss then announced his candidacy as the candidate for Leader of the Conservative Party and the new British Prime Minister, citing Russia and China.

Liz Truss's departure ahead of the Group of Twenty meeting is seen as a "deep boycott" of the Russian delegation, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Sunday.

"You know, it was a kind of deep boycott of the Russian delegation by leaving the day before," he said in an interview with the Voskresny Vecher (Sunday Night) program with Vladimir Solovyov on the Rossiya-1 television channel, quoted from TASS July 11.

He said earlier that the West had failed to boycott Russia at the G20 foreign ministers' meeting.

Last week, Truss cut short his participation in the previous G20 ministerial meeting in Indonesia and flew home due to the resignation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Later, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss 'officially' entered the race to replace Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the UK in the Daily Telegraph .

"We face huge challenges at home, amid the global economic crisis. We face huge challenges abroad, from an aggressive Russia to an increasingly assertive China," he wrote in an article published on the daily's website.

"It's going to be an uphill battle, but one we can win by giving for the British people. I put myself forward because I can lead, deliver and make tough decisions," said Truss.

Truss is known to be one of the most ardent critics of Russia in PM Boris Johnson's government. Truss and Defense Secretary Ben Wallace are the most likely candidates to become prime minister, but Wallace revealed Saturday he has decided not to run in the leadership contest.
